The Manuka Honey Process
Manuka honey is made in New Zealand, by bees gathering nectar from the native Manuka tree. It is a rare and special honey that is only produced for a few weeks every year when the Manuka trees flower.Once the bees have done their job, honey is then carefully extracted from the honeycomb at our specialised Wairarapa Apiculture Centre extraction facility in Carterton, New Zealand, with the extracted honey tested for quality.
The honey is then sent to our processing and packing facility in Te Awamutu, New Zealand and there is a second quality test on arrival. The honey is kept at natural temperatures and filtered to ensure purity. Our honey is gently creamed for a smooth and velvety texture. Once this process is complete, our honey is packed into jars and labelled according to MGO potency, before having a final quality test.
Because we manage all stages of the process in our own facilities, we can guarantee careful processing and storage with the least possible interference – protecting the honey and ensuring it retains its unique natural properties and has a beautifully smooth, velvety texture.
Comprehensive Quality Testing
All our Manuka honey is tested to ensure it is genuine New Zealand Manuka honey. We welcome the new MPI (Ministry for Primary Industries, New Zealand) definition for Manuka honey set in December 2017. The definition specifies a set of five science-based markers which identify the origin of Manuka honey. These markers need to be present to credibly call it New Zealand Manuka honey and only honey that meets the new standards will be certified for export as New Zealand Manuka honey.
Our lead test for potency is for the compound methylglyoxal (MGO). After years of research scientists discovered MGO as the key compound in Manuka honey, directly related to its potency. Manuka Health pioneered MGO as a transparent testing and rating system that gives consumers assurance of the quality of Manuka Health’s Manuka honey.
Over the past decade we have built MGO to be an internationally recognised guide in helping consumers purchase Manuka honey based on its methylglyoxal potency. The UMF grading system for Manuka honey also measures methylglyoxal as one of its compounds.
