For over three decades, Bob has been committed to providing people everywhere with the best quality foods available. His passion for health and belief in taking care of one another is as strong today as it was when he first started the business with his wife, Charlee, all those years ago. Bob plays a fundamental role in the daily operations of the business and his enthusiasm and “honest-to-goodness” approach are shared with every one of his employees. It’s this passion for providing the very best nutritional whole grains that has helped make us the leading name in health foods across the country.
The Bob & Charlee Story
Bob and Charlee met on a blind date in 1952. Twenty-six years later they founded Bob’s Red Mill together as a labor of love. It was Charlee who first inspired the couple’s whole grain adventure when, in early 1960s, she decided to create a healthier life for her family by feeding them wholesome, natural foods—fruits, vegetables, beans, and whole grains.
Charlee was a fixture in the original Bob’s Red Mill store, which quickly gained a loyal following in the local community. She took on many roles in the early days, including packaging products by hand. To this day, Bob still loves to spend time at the Whole Grain store. You can often find him there, chatting with shoppers or enjoying a healthy breakfast, as he continues to carry on their shared passion for whole grains.
In 2010, Bob surprised his employees by announcing an Employee Stock Ownership Program (ESOP) that would make everyone an employee-owner. For those who know Bob, it’s yet another example of his kind-hearted generosity. As Bob puts it, “Setting up an ESOP was just the right thing to do. I have people that have worked with me for over 30 years and each and every one of them deserve this.” You can rest assured that every Bob’s Red Mill employee is committed to sourcing, milling, testing, packaging, labeling and selling the finest products available. After all, it is our business.
It’s so obvious, it’s not. That thing you make – That thing you love – It should be a good thing. After all, isn’t that the point? Isn’t that why we’re here? To help one another. To add something. To make folks a little happier, a little healthier for doing what you do? We are Bob’s Red Mill Natural Foods. Good Food for All.
Behind the time-honored technique of traditional stone milling.
The Red Mill’s Beginnings
Bob’s journey began in the mid ’60s after coming across a book about an old stone-grinding flour mill. Unable to shake his vision of operating a flour mill that provided healthy and nutritious food, Bob tirelessly searched for his own set of usable millstones. With a little time and persistence, Bob and his wife found several sets of millstones and began their first mill in Redding, California.
In 1978 the couple left the mill and retired to Oregon City, but fate stepped in one afternoon when Bob came across an old mill that was for sale in nearby Milwaukie, Oregon. A few months later, Bob’s new mill was producing stone ground flours and cereals for local customers.
They enjoyed much success until 1988, when an arsonist’s fire tragically destroyed the building. Never one to back away from a challenge, Bob worked to build the business again from scratch, creating the Bob’s Red Mill you know and love today.
Preserving Nutrition Through Tradition
To make superb whole grain flour, no modern technology can match the Old World engineering of a stone mill. Our beautiful stone grinding mills are much like the ones used during early Roman times. Unlike high-speed steel rollers, our quartz millstones ensure the most nutritious parts of the whole grain remain, so we can pack wholesome goodness right into your bag.
Because the millstones grind at a slow speed and cool temperature, the inherent nutrients and flavor of our grains are preserved, a production ‘secret’ that allows us to seal in the freshness and bring you wholesome, quality foods, just as nature intended.
