Bob’s Values
For over three decades, Bob has been committed to providing people everywhere with the best quality foods available. His passion for health and belief in taking care of one another is as strong today as it was when he first started the business with his wife, Charlee, all those years ago. Bob plays a fundamental role in the daily operations of the business and his enthusiasm and “honest-to-goodness” approach are shared with every one of his employees. It’s this passion for providing the very best nutritional whole grains that has helped make them the leading name in health foods across the country.
The Bob & Charlee Story
Bob and Charlee met on a blind date in 1952. Twenty-six years later they founded Bob’s Red Mill together as a labor of love. It was Charlee who first inspired the couple’s whole grain adventure when, in early 1960s, she decided to create a healthier life for her family by feeding them wholesome, natural foods—fruits, vegetables, beans and whole grains.
Charlee was a fixture in the original Bob’s Red Mill store, which quickly gained a loyal following in the local community. She took on many roles in the early days, including packaging products by hand. To this day, Bob still loves to spend time at the Whole Grain store. You can often find him there, chatting with shoppers or enjoying a healthy breakfast, as he continues to carry on their shared passion for whole grains.
The Whole Story
One of the most common questions they get asked is, ‘What’s the difference between a whole grain and a processed grain?’ Put simply, a processed grain is missing some of its most nutritious parts, whereas a whole grain contains all of its nutritional health benefits.
The edible part of a whole grain, the kernel, consists of three major parts: bran, germ and endosperm. Processed grains lack both the bran and the germ, making them void of dietary fiber, iron, and B vitamins. Whole grains, on the other hand, include all three parts, offering nutrients like fiber, complex carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, fatty acids and antioxidants. All these nutrients work in harmony to provide health benefits that are greater than the sum of their parts. They won’t go so far as to call it nature’s magical elixir, but it’s not far off.
Trust, Honesty, Integrity
These are the three principles their business is built on. Their packaging is a great example of this commitment: their clear bags let you see the high quality of every one of their products. By producing the very best in whole grain foods, they’re able to fulfill their commitment to help look after more and more people through better nutrition. Bob simply wouldn’t have it any other way.
They want to make the world better with whole grains. That’s why they offer one of the largest lines of organic, whole grain foods in the country. To earn that USDA Organic logo on their products, they had to complete a rigorous certification process through the USDA’s National Organic Program. All of their products are also certified Kosher, and made with ingredients grown from non-GMO seeds. That’s because to them, natural means natural.
Their Farmers, Their Friends
Bob’s Red Mill works hard to ensure the highest quality, by maintaining a close relationship with their products every step of the way, from their breakfast cereals to flour and everything in between. Their relationship starts at the source—with the farmer who produces the grain. They maintain personal relationships with farmers all around the country and make an effort to visit their farms. Together, they ensure that they’re offering the best product available, while always using best practices.
From the first day they opened their doors in 1978, they knew that making the best products possible meant doing it all themselves. And with their state-of-the-art milling, packaging and distribution facility located right in Milwaukie, Oregon, they’re able to do just that. Bob’s Red Mill takes great pride in handling all aspects of the production process in-house, starting with inspecting the grain to ensure its quality, and ending with shipping the finished product to your door.
A Proud Leader in Gluten Free
For 40 years, the Bob’s Red Mill family has been committed to providing the very best in gluten free grains, flours, cereals and baking mixes for their friends on gluten free diets. To assure the integrity of their gluten free products, they’ve built a separate 100% gluten free facility and batch test in their quality control laboratory using an ELISA Gluten Assay test.
Beginning in 2019, they also offer some products that are certified gluten free by the Gluten-Free Certification Organization, a branch of the Gluten Intolerance Group. You can identify these select products by the GFCO logo on the product packages. Other Bob’s Red Mill gluten free products will continue to be tested and confirmed gluten free per their strict gluten free protocols. You can identify these products by the red GF logo and the gluten free testing statement on the product packages.
