BO. It happens. We all have to deal with it, but staying fresh doesn’t have to mean using harsh synthetic substances that are a total bummer for the planet.
The TGL team went ahead and put 5 all-natural eco-friendly deodorants to the test so we could really see how they perform.
How did we do it? We put each deodorant to the test using the following, completely non-scientific, 100% subjective standards.
Initial cover-up and scent
How it covers when you already are getting a whiff of pungency from showering the night before and also how it covered and smelled post morning shower.
I take multiple small workout breaks during the office day (60 crunches, 30 push-ups- not enough to get you sweaty but a definite strain on a deodorant), so we smell-tested throughout the day.
Once you’ve gotten home, walked the dogs or done your afternoon activity.
No re-applying, this was the ultimate test of each deodorant, and our poor friends and family if they didn’t work out!
This vegan, American made deodorant ticked all the boxes for initial coverup with strong but not overpowering masculine tones with enough lightness not to feel like you were putting dirt and herbs into your armpits. The coverage was as you’d expect from any traditional deodorant, with a clean finish. The daytime coverage was great, but you could start to smell some mingling of man smell by late afternoon. Coverage in the afternoon stayed decent, but by evening time I was ready for another application or a shower.
Also Vegan, on initial test it’s like your dad’s speed stick, fresh and herbal but you can’t really define any key scents, making it smell a bit chemically (even though it’s all naturally- derived). Good cover-up but at least for me wasn’t a great compliment for my body chemistry, just not the right scent. It lasted well through the day but by afternoon would definitely be wearing thin. After a sweaty walk with the dogs, there was no hope of just toweling off and giving a re-apply.
I loved this one, the scent was bitter and herbal like Campari, giving a fresh but complex smell that really worked well with my palate. The initial coverage was great but the stuff goes on a bit thick, leaving you *shudder* a bit moist for a good few minutes after applying. On a morning shower day it lasted right through and was still kicking after a walk with the pooches and I felt fine to go grab a beer with friends after. HOWEVER, on a morning where I had showered the night before and proceeded to have a pretty busy day traveling (and all the stresses that go with it), no number of reapplications could fix the unholy stench coming off of me. The chemistry just did not work, and it was not pleasant for those around me. I will say that for a normal day, this one is still a favorite, however.
This Swiss made liquid roll-on has citrusy, fresh, undertones of eucalyptus and camphor which give it a bit of old-timey ointment smell (think Noxema), which is pleasing and fresh smelling. It covered up well and feels really light, but I will say a tiny bit of stinging was noticeable. Throughout normal days this one lasted well, but on heavier days or weekends with a lot of outdoor activity, I definitely needed to reapply. Coverage when the man-smell was starting to break through, was still really good. Weleda touts this product as allowing the skin to breathe and sweat normally, and I have to say it feels that way. The thinness is a bit unnerving because you think it might not hold up, but it does a great job, just keep it with you for a second or third dose.
For everyone involved, the initial scent of this product was a clear winner. Really well-balanced scent profile of citrusy freshness with an inoffensive musky earth undertone. It goes on really well, like a clear deodorant and gives you a great smell that I was comfortable leaving the house in the morning with but equally happy to wear on a night out. The coverage lasts, but I will say as the day goes on and it settled with my body chemistry, the scent of patchouli intensified. This wasn’t actually a bad thing because although the BO was creeping up, the patchouli was balancing it well enough to go on with the day. Even with it lasting, once you get to that state of desperately needing a fresh coat of coverage, you’ll need a shower or a cleansing cloth or it just turns into a mix of strong man-smell mixed with deodorant.
We loved this range of deodorants with each one having some great features for a lot of people. Given the choice, for the majority, you’ll be happy with the Every Man Jack Cedarwood and the Bulldog Original. Both have great wide-appeal scents and do the job well. For a bit of a new smell or feel, Weleda and Kiss My Face are the way to go. Herban Cowboy, if you want that scent that takes you back to your junior- high first deodorant stick, it’s the one for you!
